What is a bipolar transistor?
A bipolar transistor is a common semiconductor device composed of two PN junctions, which can achieve functions such as current amplification, switching, and rectification. It is one of the most fundamental and important components in modern electronic circuits.
The bipolar transistor was first invented by researchers at Bell Labs in the mid-20th century. Its structure consists of a P-type semiconductor, an N-type semiconductor, and a PN structure sandwiched between them. The two sides of the PN junction are the P region and the N region, with a sandwich region in the middle. According to the properties of the interlayer region, bipolar transistors can be divided into NPN and PNP types. In NPN type diodes, the N region is the interlayer region; In PNP type diodes, the P region is the interlayer region. Among them, the thickness of the interlayer area is very thin, only a few micrometers, in order to provide fast current flow.
The working principle of a bipolar transistor is based on the forward and reverse bias effects of a PN junction. When the PN junction of a bipolar transistor is forward biased, holes in the P region will diffuse to the N region, while electrons in the N region will diffuse to the P region, causing current to flow through the interlayer region. When the PN junction of the transistor is reverse biased, the holes in the P region and the electrons in the N region are blocked by the PN junction, and current cannot pass through. This characteristic allows the bipolar transistor to be used as a switch, with a conducting state when forward biased and a cutoff state when reverse biased.
The main function of a bipolar transistor is to amplify current. When the diode is in an amplified state, a small signal input can generate a large signal output. This is because when the input current is large enough, it can control the magnitude of the output current. This makes the bipolar transistor widely used in amplification circuits, such as amplifiers, power amplifiers, etc.
In addition, diodes can also be used as rectifiers. When AC power is input to a transistor, it can be converted into DC power because the transistor only allows current to pass in one direction. This characteristic is very important in power circuits.
